I have been privileged to have grown up along the shores of Carlingford Lough, ‘emigrate’ to distant lands but return to live along the ‘Mourne Coastal Route’. During that time I have been fascinated by local folklore, myths and legends of why the Vikings felt ‘at home’ sailing up the Lough, how the Normans defended Greencastle, the importance of the Silent Valley, and how WW2 changed the Mourne landscape. Through my interests in genealogy, photography, researching the ‘Olden Ways of Mourne’ and my involvement in tourism, I have come to realise that not only do we have a close connection between the land and the coastline but also how the Mournes shaped the local population providing an economic, social and cultural lifeline in a bygone era.
